Job Description: HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

SUMMARY OF POSITION
Operates various types of large and valuable heavy duty equipment in the repair and maintenance of city facilities, streets, drainage system, and right‑of‑ways.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
1. Reports to: Director of Streets and Sanitation; may receive direction from Heavy Equipment Operator ‑ Crew Leader.
2. Directs: This is a non‑supervisory position.
3. Other: Has contact with other city employees and occasionally with the general public.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Essential Duties*
Operates heavy equipment such as a gradall, motor grader,. front‑end loader, road roller, dump truck, back hoe, jack hammer, street sweeper, and light or heavy truck as required and instructed;
Checks oil, water, fuel, tires., and hydraulic system, and performs other routine inspections to ensure vehicles are in proper working condition;
Grades, maintains, patches, and resurfaces streets;
Levels streets and other areas;
Cuts, collects, and disposes of tree limbs, trash, and general debris found along streets, roads, drainage system, and other city facilities;
Removes and installs culverts;
Cleans and unstops storm drains, culverts, and ditches; and
Loads, transports, and unloads necessary materials for assigned projects.
Other Important Duties*
Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: the safe operation of the equipment used and of the provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to operation of light and heavy motorized equipment; and methods, practices, material, and equipment used in street and drainage system construction and maintenance.
Skill/Ability to: operate light and heavy motorized equipment effectively and safely; service and make minor repairs on equipment, applying safety standards to prevent hazards; understand and follow instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers; and maintain Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities and good driving record.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
High school graduation, or its equivalent, plus at least two years of experience as an equipment operator, including experience operating heavy equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED
Appropriate Texas driver's license.
