Job Description: FIREFIGHTER/DRIVER

SUMMARY OF POSITION
Ensures the protection of residents and property from fires and prevents fires when possible. Duties include fire suppression, rescue, and EMS First Responder activities.

SHIFT REQUIRMENTS AND ORGANIZATION:

48/96 Three Shift Schedule (A, B, & C Shifts);

Shifts change is at 0730 with a shift pass off;

Off Duty Recall: may be called back in for an unspecified length of time due to emergencies and disasters or in preparation of a pending disaster, or to fill a vacant shift to maintain minimum staffing;

Subject to being held over after assigned shift due to late emergency incidents or to maintain minimum staffing levels

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
1. Reports to: Departmental Shift Captain; Assistant Chief or Fire Chief

2. Directs: This is a non-supervisory position; however, may provide direction to volunteer firefighters at scene of a fire.

3. Other: Has contact with other city departments, local and state officials, civic groups, and the general public.

Essential Duties*

Have proficient knowledge of all city policies, fire department policies and operating guidelines, and EMS protocols;

Ability to drive and operate all fire apparatus and equipment;

Completes Phase Training within first year of employment;

Responds to and mitigates many emergency incidents to include; fire alarms, structure fires (residential and commercial), grass and woods wildland fires, vehicle fires, other type of fires, vehicle rescues, specialized rescues (ropes, confined space, trench, water, and angle), boat operations;

Performs ventilation, salvage and overhaul work;

Performs clean-up and performs necessary activities that all equipment is operational ready after all incidents;

As a First Responder Organization, you are required to respond to and provide Emergency Medical First Responder services and to assist the EMS Provider;

Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, station, and grounds, including minor repairs and clean up;

Receives emergency telephone and radio messages and dispatches the necessary fire equipment;

Participates in prevention and public education activities;

Participates and completes continuing education classes as necessary;

Responsible for all annual Continuing Education requirements to maintain all required certifications;

Completes documentation as required, including writing a comprehensive report documenting the
situation at the scene, orders received, and other information deemed pertinent;

Performs daily department duties such as apparatus & equipment checks & cleanings, station clean up (bay areas & floors, tool rooms, day rooms, sleeping quarters, kitchen, bathrooms). See tour assignment sheet for reference.

Performs such other related duties as may be assigned by the Shift Captain, Assistant Chief, or Chief.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of. principles and practices of fire prevention and suppression; fire sprinkler and alarm systems; departmental guidelines, policies and procedures; city geography; target hazards; and firefighting resources, such as personnel, equipment, water supply, and communication.

Skill/Ability to: perform assigned duties in difficult and challenging situations; perform maintenance of small engines and breathing apparatus; operate extraction equipment; demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers within the fire department, within other city departments, and local and regional agencies; prepare complete and accurate reports; and maintain appropriate necessary certifications, Texas Class B driver's license.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
High school diploma, or its equivalent, plus completion of a state-approved fire academy and an Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) Class; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED
Basic Firefighter Certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection Personnel Standards and Education, Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) certification through the Texas Department of State and Health Services, and a Texas Class B Exempt driver's license.

Within the first year of employment the following must be obtained:

NIMS 100, 200, 700, & 800
Courage to be Safe (CTBS)
Traffic Incident Management (TIMS)
Driver Operator Pumper (within 2 years of employment)
